“We will never really be in Auschwitz. We can visit, and come and go as we please; but we will never really be there because it is nothing like it used to be. We will never be at Auschwitz.”      - A quote from our guide, Jacob

Auschwitz II - Birkenau

Special Closing Ceremony -Memorial Service

We shall not forget.

The participants of March of Remembrance and Hope from the United States and Canada conducted the closing Memorial Ceremony at the end of our tour of the camp.  Some participants sang songs, while there were also readings from other faiths such as Christian, Jewish, 1st Nations, and Muslim. The main message I got from these messages was that we have to love our neighbor and treat everyone with respect. Then, some of the Holocaust survivors said Kaddish and dedicate it to their family members who died during the Holocaust.  At this time, the dark clouds were forming and there was a drizzle.  It looked like we would have to leave soon or face the storm….as we all walked back toward the main entrance, towards our tour bus; the sun suddenly appeared and shone through the dark clouds.  It was almost like the sunshine wanted to penetrate out of the clouds and say “goodbye” to us before we left.  It was very beautiful!!  The scenery was amazing…..and at that moment, I felt as though it was a sign.  It was very symbolic, it seemed like during the darkest hour (dark clouds forming), there were tears (drizzling rain drops), there were still some peace (through songs and music), and to the survivors, there was still light at the end of their dark tunnel – as shown in the photos I took that the clouds indeed had a silver lining
