“Not important is where we live,

            And who we are,

            Let’s look at them.

            Their fate may be ours.”

Krakow

Isaac Synagogue (Izaaka Synagogue) q

Friday, May 26, 2006 - They are many synagogues in this small city.  Jacob told us that everyone has her or his 'own' synagogue that the whole family go to.  It is like their 'community.'  See the picture of a sign that shows all the synagogues around the area.

We walked a short distance and reached another synagogue. This synagogue was named after a rich Jew, Izaak Jakubowicz, who financed the construction of this synagogue in 1638.  Opened in 1644, this synagogue had gone through a series of incidents which include desecration by the Nazis during the war, someone was shot (On 5 December 1939 an official of the Jewish Community, Maksymilian Redlich was shot after refusing to burn the Tora scrolls though being told to do so by the Nazis), the synagogue was also used as a storage area for props and decorations from the Slowacki Theatre, used as an artist/sculptor’s workshop (1950’s to 1969) and a fire (1970’s).

Opened to the public in 1997, the back room of the synagogue now displays photos of the Holocaust in Krakow.
