“We will never really be in Auschwitz. We can visit, and come and go as we please; but we will never really be there because it is nothing like it used to be. We will never be at Auschwitz.”      - A quote from our guide, Jacob

Umschlagplatz

Umschlagplatz – The Umschlagplatz, which meant trans-shipment square, was the former railway where deportees from the Warsaw ghetto were loaded onto cattle trucks with claims that they were to be relocated.  However, in reality they were sent to the death at Treblinka, about 40 miles northeast of Warsaw.  A memorial was constructed on this site, where we saw common names common in Warsaw during that time on the walls to commemorate those deported to and died in Treblinka.
