What is a "hero"?

Trail of Heroes

We walked along a trail known as Trail of Heroes.  Along this trail, there are many monuments commemorating people who have helped the victims in some way during the Holocaust. To be included in the Trail of Heroes, one must have helped others and died in the Holocaust. (See slideshow below)

Rapaport Monument

The Trail of Heroes also brought us to the Rapaport Monument, which was built to commemorate the heroes in the Warsaw ghetto.  What is a hero? How do you envision a hero looks like?

This monument shows us there are 2 sides to how one can visualize "heroes."  On one side, heroes look like strong, well-built men, like Greek Gods.

On the other side, are the true heroes of the Holocaust, civilians and typical people that helped the children.  The image shows adults holding the children while facing the ground (knowing their fate was doomed) while the children are looking above, like looking forward to a new world because they are innocent and do not know their fate.  This monument symbolizes those who walked to the Umschlagplatz or held the children's hand as they walked in the gas chambers with them.
