Friday,
May 26, 2006 - Krakow Grand
Square.
The Krakow Hourly Trumpet signal, or also known as Hejnal Mariacki, was established in the Middle Ages. It was used to announce the opening and the closing of the city gates as well as to alarm fellow citizens whenever the bugler saw a fire or the enemy forces.
One day, while the bugler was playing the trumpet, he was shot through his throat by a Tatar archer in 1241. Therefore, every full hour the golden trumpet will be played and then the melody will end abruptly to commemorate the time when the bugler was shot by an arrow. The trumpet signal was said to be heard all over the city’s old Town district. After the melody comes to an abrupt end, it is next played towards the east, the south and the north from the windows of the tower. At noon the whole ritual is broadcast by the Polish radio.
